About Murfreesboro

Living in Murfreesboro

Murfreesboro sits at the geographic center of Tennessee, about 35 miles southeast of downtown Nashville along Interstate 24. It is the county seat of Rutherford County and one of the largest cities in the state, yet the downtown square around the 1859 courthouse still feels like a small town, with locally owned restaurants, shops, and a year-round calendar of events.

Home to Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro mixes college-town energy with established family neighborhoods and a steady supply of new construction on the city's edges. Buyers find everything from historic homes near downtown to new subdivisions off Veterans Parkway and the Blackman area.

MTSU

Middle Tennessee State University anchors the east side of the city.

Real estate market

Murfreesboro offers the widest range of housing in the county. Established neighborhoods close to downtown and MTSU trade alongside large new-construction communities in Blackman, Barfield, and along the Highway 99 corridor. Townhomes and condos add entry-level options, and acreage is still available on the city's rural edges toward Lascassas and Christiana.

Schools and education

Murfreesboro is served by two public systems: Murfreesboro City Schools for elementary grades inside the city, and Rutherford County Schools for middle and high school and for county addresses. Central Magnet School, Siegel, Oakland, Blackman, Riverdale and Rockvale high schools all serve different parts of the area. MTSU, with more than 20,000 students, anchors the city's east side.

Things to do

Stones River National Battlefield preserves the site of one of the Civil War's major engagements and connects to the Murfreesboro Greenway. Barfield Crescent Park offers more than 400 acres of trails and camping, Old Fort Park has golf and sports fields, and the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring is a favorite with young families. The downtown square hosts concerts, the Saturday Market, and holiday events.

Location and commute

Interstate 24 runs along the city's western edge, putting downtown Nashville and the airport within roughly 40 minutes in normal traffic. Smyrna and the Nissan plant are a short drive north, and Shelbyville and Manchester are reachable to the south and east on US-231 and US-41.
